"Bretón, the Devil's Gaze" is a three-part, 50-minute series directed by José Ángel Bohollo and co-produced by Canal Sur Radio and Television. It meticulously reconstructs an unforgettable case. In the midst of a separation from his wife, Ruth Ortiz, José Bretón murdered his two children, Ruth, six, and José, two. On a small family property outside Córdoba, he built a bonfire fueled by liters of diesel and burned their young bodies, intending to make them disappear forever. It was Saturday, October 8, 2011. This is the beginning of the most publicized parricide case in Spain, which gripped the nation for nearly two years.

Synopsis

Unable to cope with his wife's death, Bretón resorted to the most atrocious violence: against his children. With the most refined sadism, he ensured they would never be found, so that he and she would be forever bound together in the search. And with the most horrific of methods: drugging them and burning them in a gigantic bonfire until their bodies were carried away by the wind. The police investigation made a terrible mistake, but a year later he was finally charged. And convicted.

Chapter 1 / “Ruth and José”
The first installment focuses on the children's father's final actions and how the absence and void left by Ruth and José becomes increasingly apparent. This first episode concludes with a full phone call from Bretón, which is both striking and aptly summarizes his attitude, his deceitfulness, and his lack of empathy.

Chapter 2 / “Operation Shining”
begins with the creation of the case investigation team and concludes with the maternal family insisting that “there is no proof that the children are not alive” and maintaining the kidnapping theory. They are convinced that José Bretón has them hidden somewhere. That is their hope.

Chapter 3 / “The Burned Monster”
José Bretón is responsible for an atrocious crime, a monster behind the mask of a respectful and hardworking man, a responsible father, who kept the whole country on edge for months with his silences and lies.
